Afroeuropean Mobilities in Francophone African Literatures

Afroeuropean Mobilities in Francophone African Literatures

Autor: Anna-leena Toivanen

Número de Páginas: 279

This open access book contributes to the mobility humanities from the perspective of postcolonial literary mobilities and aims at enhancing dialogue between mobilities research and postcolonial literary studies. The study produces new perspectives on Afroeuropean mobilities in Francophone African and Afrodiasporic literatures from the mid-twentieth century to the present, covering a wide set of texts across literary genres. Focusing on representations of educational travel, tourism, diasporic returns, work-related mobilities, and clandestine migratory journeys, Toivanen examines portrayals of mobility practices and modes of transport to map out the meanings of embodied (im)mobilities in the Afroeuropean context. In addition to thematic analysis, the volume also explores the manifestations of mobility in literary form.

Sexual Crime and the Experience of Imprisonment

Sexual Crime and the Experience of Imprisonment

Autor: Nicholas Blagden , Belinda Winder , Kerensa Hocken , Rebecca Lievesley , Phil Banyard , Helen Elliott

Número de Páginas: 234

This book focuses on the experience of imprisonment from the perspectives of individuals with sexual convictions. It stresses the importance of a positive and rehabilitative prison climate. The volume begins with an exploration of the theoretical underpinnings of a rehabilitative prison climate and discusses some of the practical ways of creating rehabilitative cultures in prisons housing people convicted of sexual offences. Four empirical chapters focus on the experience of stigmatisation, prison officers’ attitudes towards prisoners’ offences, negotiating the ‘sex offender’ identity in prisons and the varied experience of ‘being’ in prisons exclusively for individuals with sexual convictions. Throughout the authors discuss the specific benefits of peer-support, such as the chance to earn self-forgiveness, construct adaptive identities and consequently move away from harmful labels. The book also spotlights a chapter on the experience of imprisonment written by a former service-user,this unique position offers an insightful account of an individual’s journey through the prison system.

Assessing Hate Crime Laws

Assessing Hate Crime Laws

Autor: Lucille Micheletto

Número de Páginas: 243

This book offers a critical analysis of hate crime law using Italy as a case study. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, it develops an international framework for mapping hate crime laws onto the phenomenon of hate crime itself, allowing for better legislation to be drafted. It shows how this analytical tool may be used in practice by applying it to legislation in Italy, where Parliament recently dismissed a legislative proposal to extend hate crime law to sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability. The framework allows readers to critique the rationale behind hate crime laws and the effect of, or potential effect of, their implementation. This book ultimately seeks to answer to the question of how and whether States can legitimately introduce a harsher sentence for bias motivated crimes. It bridges interdisciplinary hate studies and more traditional legal analysis. It speaks to an international audience as well as to an audience with a specific interest in the Italian context.

Lasithi, a History of Settlement on a Highland Plain in Crete

Autor: Livingston Vance Watrous

Número de Páginas: 152

This publication is the outcome of a project begun in 1973 with an intensive survey of the Lasithi plain in Crete; it documents and discusses the history of ancient settlement in this rich valley high up in the Diktaian mountain range. The core of the book is a survey of archaeological evidence for settlement in the Neolithic to Late Roman periods, but the author also extends his work to later periods. The area was exploited by the Venetians in the 15th and 16th centuries as a source of grain, and the author draws on documentary evidence to describe their agricultural practices—many of which have extended into the modern period.

The Globalization of Hate

The Globalization of Hate

Autor: Jennifer Schweppe , Mark Austin Walters

Número de Páginas: 520

The Globalization of Hate: Internationalizing Hate Crime? is the first book to examine the impact of globalization on our understanding of hate speech and hate crime. Bringing together internationally acclaimed scholars with researchers, policy makers and practitioners from across the world, it critically scrutinises the concept of hate crime as a global phenomenon, seeking to examine whether hate crime can, or should, be conceptualised within an international framework and, if so, how this might be achieved. Beginning with the global dynamics of hate, the contributions analyse whether hate crime can be defined globally, whether universal principles can be applied to the phenomenon, how hatred is spread, and how it impacts upon our global society. The middle portion of the book moves beyond the broader questions of globalisation to jurisdictional examples of how globalization impacts upon our understanding of, and also our responses to, hate crime. The chapters explore in greater detail what is happening around the world and how the international concepts of hate crime are being operationalised locally, drawing out the themes of globalization and internationalization that are...

Número de Páginas: 153

At present, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields, and STEM research in particular. Science and gender equality are, however, essential to ensure sustainable development as highlighted by UNESCO. In order to change traditional mindsets, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes defeated, and girls and women should be encouraged to pursue STEM careers.
